Various types of video advertising

What is instream ads ?

Video in-stream ads are commercials that appear before, during and after Internet videos. Linear ads look like television commercials. They delay or interrupt the video and typically last 15 to 30 seconds. Those that run before videos are referred to as pre-roll. Mid-roll ads occur during the video and post-rolls display at the end. Nonlinear overlay ads are superimposed over the video and allow the user to continue watching while the ad is displayed.

  • Viewers can choose to skip the video ad after 5 seconds.
  • If they choose not to skip the video ad, the YouTube video view count will be incremented when the viewer watches 30 seconds of the video ad (or the duration if it's shorter than 30 seconds) or engages with your video, whichever comes first.
  • Video interactions include clicks to visit your website, call-to-action overlays (CTAs), cards, and companion banners. If view counts on YouTube are a concern, it's a good idea to make videos at least 12 seconds long.
  • YouTube analytics doesn’t track views less than 10 seconds.

Create a In Stream video campaign

  • TrueView video ads are an exciting way to reach and engage your audience on YouTube and across the web.
  • You can create and manage your TrueView campaigns in AdWords, using the “Video” campaign type.

Before you begin

Here are some things to keep in mind before you create TrueView campaigns and ads:
  • Instream ads and ad groups are created with the "Video" campaign type. Within this campaign type, instream video ad format, CPV, and Target CPA bidding strategies are supported.
  • Instream video campaigns cannot include text, images, or other video ad formats.
  • To create a Instream video ad, your videos must be hosted on YouTube.
  • Reporting for Instream campaigns and ad groups include metrics specific to video ads, including views, views rate and views action, that aren't available in all Ad Words campaign management tools.
  • Ad groups will each be assigned a format (either in-stream or video discovery), and can contain only ads of that same format. For example, an in-stream ad group can contain only in-stream video ads and their associated targeting criteria and bids. Likewise, a video discovery ad group can contain only video discovery ads and their associated targeting criteria and bids.
  • If you want to run both in-stream and video discovery formats in the same Instream video campaign, you will need to create multiple ad groups.
To create a True View video campaign with only one ad format, follow the first set of instructions below. To create a True View campaign with both ad formats, continue to the second set of instructions below to create an additional ad group.

What Is Bumper Ads ?

Create a bumper video campaign

Bumper ads are a short video ad format, designed to allow you to reach more customers and increase awareness about your brand by using a short, memorable message. With videos of just 6 seconds or less, bumper ads let you reach people with bite-sized messages, while providing a minimal impact on their viewing experience. You can create bumper video campaigns in AdWords using the “Video” campaign type.

How it works

  • Videos must be 6 seconds or shorter. Viewers can’t skip your ad.
  • A view of your bumper ad won’t increment the video’s YouTube view count.
  • Bumper ads use CPM (cost-per-thousand impression) bidding. Your pay each time your ad is shown 1,000 times.
  • Bumper ads can help increase awareness about your brand. They often work well when run along with related Instream ads. (Note: Instream ads must be created in a separate campaign.)
  • The short format can be especially effective on mobile, when people are often watching videos on the go.
Below, we’ll walk you through how to set up a bumper video campaign in AdWords.

Before you begin

  • Before you set up a bumper video campaign, you should be familiar with video campaigns and video ad formats. Keep in mind that a bumper campaign can only contain bumper ads.
  • You’ll need to create TrueView ads in a separate campaign.
  • Bumper campaigns require a video of 6 seconds or less, and the video must be hosted on YouTube.
What is video discovery ads ?

Your video discovery ad includes an image and some text. It can run on YouTube search results, next to related videos, and on the YouTube homepage. This ad will show differently, depending on the website or where on YouTube it appears. You pay only when someone clicks your ad to watch your video.
